Have you ever wondered just why is there a magnet in industrial sewing machine oil pans? They play a surprisingly important role in a modestly subtle way.
Generally over the use of your industrial sewing machine, you ignore the oil pan besides occasionally checking to make sure your level is good, right? But if you’ve looked a little closer, you may have noticed a small dime-sized magnet attached in the oil pan somewhere near the vicinity of the drainage hole.

Magnet in industrial sewing machine oil pans
This magnet has the job of attracting broken needles, needle tips, stray pins, and also metal shavings. It’s location means that these metal objects do not enter your oil pump, and thus does not circulate throughout your machine potentially causing damage.
If you’ve ever broken a needle, which of course you have and I have and everyone else has, it’s rare you find the tip of the needle. It just seemingly disappears off the face of your sewing room. Chances are, it fell underneath the bobbin and into the oil pan. Having this handy little magnet in there will eventually attract that needle tip, instead of your oil pump.

Industrial sewing machine service appointment
We’ve seen this happen exactly at nearly every industrial sewing machine appointment. We find all manner of metal objects attached to the magnet, which means it definitely does its job. We have also seen oil pans where this magnet is nowhere to be found in the oil pan… it’s something we check for and replace if it is missing in action during a service appointment. One memorable time we found the magnet attached to the top of the sewing machine itself, holding a small collection of pins. While I’m sure this seemed convenient in the moment, the magnet was in the oil pan for a good reason!
